I snuck off for an hour before dinner on Saturday to give my new toy a spin. I took a brisk walk and made my way to the section of the railroad tracks near Rifle Range Road. A small lesson was learnt for the day: flip-flops don’t do well on track gravel.

A legacy of our colonial heritage, the railroad tracks have always been a familiar sight for me growing up. Both my primary school and junior college (before it moved) were located just beside the tracks along Holland Road.

While letting the pinhole camera do it’s thing (cloudy day = long exposure), I took a couple of shots with my digital camera (talk about contrast between the old and new). I could have walked a little further to the small Bukit Timah station but dinner was waiting at home. Typical of my luck, I heard a familiar rumble as I started walking home. The evening KTM train roared past just as I turned to look over my shoulder…

Maybe next time, Old Dame.

An early appointment in the City Hall area brought me there last Saturday morning. I didn’t finish until past noon and went hunting for a simple lunch after that. I found a coffeeshop along Waterloo Street, a stone’s throw away from the Art Museum. After a satisfying lunch of chicken rice, I found to my delight that entrance to the museum was free for the day. It was not a bad thing that photography was not permitted in the galleries (it is allowed in the museum’s public areas); focusing on the art pieces is easier when you’re not peering at them through the viewfinder. I spent a satisfying 2 hours going through the museum’s galleries.

I photowalked a little in the area, stumbling upon the Church of Saints Peter and Paul (official site), a Roman Catholic church built in 1870 along Waterloo Street. The church, which serves the primarily the Chinese Catholic community, has been gazetted a national monument.

We ran into some rather unpleasant business which I will not go into detail here but we managed to get a good morning’s walk out of it anway.

Chinatown has alot to offer for photography enthusiasts and we saw many fellow camera-totting photographers on the streets. I didn’t cover as much ground as I hoped but that just means I will have more to shoot the next time I visit Chinatown.

Before heading out, I did a little research to locate the good photo spots in Chinatown and mapped them in Google Maps with some additional information. I’m putting it online for my own reference and for anyone who may be interested. I was surprised at how much fun the gallery turned out to be. The gallery featured a number of fascinating miniature cityscape models. Time flew by as we busied ourselves identifying the Lilliputian-sized landmarks.

I have always loved craft and I tip my hat to the amazing people who must have spent countless hours building the detailed scaled-down models. I had a great time at the gallery and recommend everyone to pop by at least once to check it out. Admission is free to the gallery at the URA Centre (45 Maxwell Road) and it is opened from 9am to 5pm, Mondays to Saturdays.

I was in the area today and finally did so. The afternoon sun washed out a little of the colour in the photos but it was fun anyway.
